Junior B’s with good win over Mountcollins

West Junior B League
Ballysteen 3-10
Mountcollins 2-4

A fine performance by our Junior B team, saw us comfortably overcome Mountcollins on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-4.

Playing with the aid of a strong breeze we started brightly with Stephen Carrig opened the scoring from a free, before the industrious Anthony O’Shaughnessy slotted over a magnificent score from the sideline. Great work around midfield from Mark Murphy and Stephen Carrig combined to release Barry McMahon who deftly finished to the back of the net. Barry followed up this goal with another point before another Stephen Carrig placed ball left us in a commanding position approaching the break. Conor Enright was mopping up a lot of ball at half back, and Ian Ranahan was solid under the high ball ensuring that scoring chances for Mountcollins were limited. Jack Neville and Mountcollins traded scores to leave the scoreline 1-5 to 0-1 at half time.

A Mountcollins goal early in the second half threatened to turn the tide, but stellar performances from Eamonn Murphy, Brian Cassidy and Declan Somers in the full back line ensured that we kept our grip on the game. At this stage McMahon and Corey Flynn had asserted their dominance at midfield and their strong running caused problems for the Mountcollins defence as Jack Neville and O’Shaughnessy stretched the lead. A well worked point by Stephen Carrig, was followed up with an audacious lobbed goal by O’Shaughnessy.

Dean Carrig making his junior B debut, replaced his cousin Stephen after 40 minutes. He was quick to make an impression, rifling the ball to the net to leave us leading 3-9 to 1-2 entering the closing stages. As the rain poured down Mountcollins staged a mini fight back scoring 1-2 in quick succession before a Jack Neville free rounded off the scoring.

Well done to all involved in what was very good performance. This fine win now leaves us on 2 points after 2 games. Our last group game will be against St Senans where we will require a high scoring win to see us progress to the knockout stages.
